Puku helps you learn German from short clips of real German videos, with transcripts, translations and a dictionary. There are no ads inside Puku.
We advertise Puku on Facebook and Instagram. To know whether those ads work, the app tells Meta when it is installed and opened and when a free trial or subscription starts. Your device's advertising identifier is included only if you allow it when your iPhone asks.
You do not need an account. Without one, your progress is tied to a random identifier the app creates on your phone, not to you.
We collect only what is needed to run the app, we never sell personal information, and your personal data is never used to train AI models.
Your watch history and the words you look up stay on your phone. You can delete your account and everything in it from inside the app at any time.
Puku is operated by Aayush Gelal ("Puku", "we", "us" or "our"), who provides the Puku mobile application. If you have any questions about this policy or your data, contact us at aayushgelal4@gmail.com.
Without an account. When you first open Puku, the app creates a random identifier on your device. Our server uses it to keep your settings and progress: your level, daily goal, the reasons and topics you picked during onboarding, the words you have saved and their review schedule, the clips you have saved, and daily totals such as minutes watched, clips watched, words looked up, reviews done and your streak. This identifier is not linked to your name, email or any other account.
If you sign in. Signing in with Apple or Google is optional. If you do, we receive your name and email address (Apple may give us a private relay address instead) so we can create and secure your account and keep your progress on every device you sign in on.
Kept only on your phone. Your watch history, the words you tap while watching, and your app settings (theme, subtitles, playback speed) are stored on your device and are never sent to us.
Feedback and reports. If you send feedback or report a clip, we receive what you write, the email address you choose to give us (if any), the clip concerned and the app version.
Purchases. If you subscribe, the App Store or Google Play and our subscription partner RevenueCat give us a purchase token, your subscription status and an app user identifier. We never receive or store your card number.
Reminders. If you allow notifications, the reminder before your free trial ends is scheduled on your phone. Nothing about it is stored on our servers.
Ad measurement. The app includes Meta's app SDK. It sends Meta events about the app itself: that it was installed and opened, and that a free trial or subscription started, with the plan and its price. It also sends device information such as the model and operating system version. If you allow tracking when your iPhone asks, your device's advertising identifier (IDFA) is included; if you do not, it is not. These events contain no learning data - not your words, clips, level or progress - and no name or email.
Technical information. Our servers keep limited logs, such as an IP address, the time of a request and any error, to keep the service secure and working. These logs are kept for no more than 30 days.
The clips in Puku are played with YouTube's embedded player, a YouTube API Service. When a clip plays, YouTube and Google receive information from your device, such as your IP address and details of the playback, under their own policies. Google's Privacy Policy is at https://policies.google.com/privacy.
By using Puku you also agree to be bound by the YouTube Terms of Service, at https://www.youtube.com/t/terms.
We do not share your Puku data with YouTube, and Puku does not access your YouTube or Google account.
To provide the app: choosing clips at a pace that suits your level, keeping your saved words and their review schedule, and tracking your daily goal and streak.
To keep your progress in step across devices when you sign in.
To operate subscriptions, verify purchases and prevent abuse.
To keep the app secure, fix problems and improve it, and to answer you when you write to us.
To measure and improve our own ads on Facebook and Instagram, using the events described in section 2. We do not show ads in Puku, we do not sell personal information, and we do not build advertising profiles ourselves.
The transcripts, translations, word definitions and levels in Puku are prepared in advance by our own systems, using speech recognition and an AI translation service, from publicly available videos. Your personal information is not sent to these services, and nothing you do in the app is used to train AI models.
We share limited information with the following providers, only as needed to run Puku. This is the complete list:
Apple and Google Sign-In: signing in, if you choose to.
Supabase: our database and account storage.
Oracle Cloud: hosting for our application server.
Vercel: hosting for our website and the page that plays video in the app.
Google (YouTube): playing the video clips, as described in section 3.
Apple App Store, Google Play and RevenueCat: processing and validating subscriptions.
Expo: delivering app updates. It handles only technical information needed to deliver the app itself, such as the app version.
Meta (Facebook and Instagram): measuring our own ads, through the events described in section 2. Meta handles them under its own Privacy Policy, at https://www.facebook.com/privacy/policy.
Each provider is bound by contract to handle information only for the purposes described here and to protect it to the same standard as this policy. We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the rights and safety of our users or others.
Apart from Meta's SDK for measuring our own ads, Puku contains no third-party analytics or advertising software.
Puku is a general-audience app for language learners and is not directed at children under 13 (or under the age of digital consent where you live, such as 16 in parts of the EU). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under that age. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
We keep your information only as long as it is needed to provide the service. Your progress and account details are kept while your account or device identifier is in use.
When you delete your account in the app, we delete your account, saved words, reviews, saved clips and activity from our servers straight away. Feedback and clip reports you sent are kept to improve the app, but no longer linked to you. Server logs are deleted within 30 days.
Delete in the app: Settings, then Delete account, removes your account and everything in it. Clearing the app from your phone removes everything stored only on the device.
Access and export: you can ask for a copy of your data, or for it to be deleted, by emailing aayushgelal4@gmail.com.
Notifications: you can turn them off at any time in your device settings.
Subscriptions: manage or cancel them in your App Store or Google Play account.
Depending on where you live, you may have further rights, such as correction, portability and objection, and the right to complain to your local data protection authority. Where the EU or UK GDPR applies, we rely on your consent (for signing in and notifications) and on our legitimate interests in running, securing and improving the service.
If you live in California or another U.S. state with a consumer-privacy law, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, to access, correct and delete it, and to opt out of its "sale" or "sharing". We do not sell personal information. Sending the ad-measurement events in section 2 to Meta may count as "sharing" under California law; you can opt out by declining tracking when your iPhone asks, by turning off "Allow Apps to Request to Track" in your iPhone's Privacy settings, or by emailing us. We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights. To make a request, email aayushgelal4@gmail.com.
The Puku app uses no advertising cookies. It asks before using your device's advertising identifier (IDFA), which it uses only to measure our own ads through Meta, as described in section 2. If you say no, or later turn tracking off in your iPhone settings, it is not used. YouTube's embedded player may use its own cookies or local storage within the player, under Google's policies. Our website uses no analytics or advertising cookies.
We use encryption in transit, access controls and reputable infrastructure providers to protect information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your data and will notify you of a material breach as the law requires.
Our providers may process data in countries other than yours. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses, and we keep the data we transfer to a minimum.
We may update this policy as the app changes. When we make material changes we will update the date above and, where appropriate, tell you in the app. Continuing to use Puku after a change takes effect means you accept the updated policy.
